Brightcove Inc. (NASDAQ: BCOV), the largest provider of video streaming technology and services by revenue, has announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire the online video platform business of Ooyala, another major player in the online video space.
Brightcove states that this is purely a technology play, and intends to integrate product and engineering resources, which includes their video content management and publishing platform Backlot, Analytics, Live, and its underlying IP and associated patents.
The deal will enable Brightcove to expand south of the border by integrating engineering, support, and sales staff from Ooyala’s existing Mexico operations. In addition to team and tech integration, Brightcove will take on all existing Ooyala customer, reseller, and partner relationships. Aspects of Ooyala’s technology will be integrated into the Brightcove platform to provide a more robust global offering for all customers.
Ooyala was the platform that would never die. The company took some risks over the years and eventually netted out with a loss on investment and was acquired by Telstra in what was considered a fire sale in 2014. After the acquisition Telstra was unsuccessful integrating the Ooyala technology into their book of offerings and was shortly thereafter considered a write-down.
Then Ooyala lashed out at Brightcove in 2017 with a lawsuit claiming “misappropriation of trade secrets” after a number of Ooyala employees fled to Brightcove.
Today Ooyala will become part of Brightcove.
